The Third Outfit
The outfit that has to do six different things in a single day.
When I look back at the outfits I’ve worn over the past week, I notice a pattern.
We’re finally in that first truly hot stretch of summer, and apparently all I want to wear right now is clothing that can keep up with me. Nothing particularly structured. Nothing that requires much fussing. Just easy clothes that are as comfortable at 7 a.m. as they are at 7 p.m.
Which got me thinking about what might actually be the most important outfit in my closet.
Fashion loves a category. Workwear, activewear, vacation wear, date-night outfits. The special purchases we convince ourselves we need despite having no real styling plan—or cost-per-wear strategy—to speak of.
But what about the outfit that has to do approximately six different things in a single day?
The one you put on before school drop-off because you're hoping to squeeze in a few productive hours at a coffee shop before camp pickup. The one that can handle a video call, a playground bench, a grocery run, a teeball game, and the very real possibility that you'll throw everyone's bags in the car and make a beeline for the lake—with a burger stop somewhere along the way.
I've come to think of this as the Third Outfit. In other words: the outfit that has to survive real life. And with today officially kicking off summer break in our house, it's about to be working overtime.
What I'm craving from my clothes right now is simple: comfort, yes, but also flexibility. The days are long. The schedules are loose. I want an outfit that can move from Point A to Point Z without requiring a costume change. Cool enough for a humid afternoon, layered enough for an over-air-conditioned coffee shop, casual enough for camp pickup, but polished enough that if someone texts, "Want to grab a drink?" the answer can be a hard yes.
Alicia Lund recently wrote about having a "Summer of Saying Yes," and maybe that's exactly what the Third Outfit is: the wardrobe version of that idea. An outfit that’s ready for anything.
So I put together five mood boards that capture the kind of summer dressing I’m defaulting to right now: comfortable, versatile, and still with a little personality.
Because after all…
Rigid waistbands and clothes that can't roll with the punches? NOT FUN.
(For more lessons in fun summer dressing, just ask Elle Sundberg. She gets it).
I love an outfit that mixes signals, and this one does exactly that. The athletic shorts keep things comfortable, the blazer brings a little structure, and the lace flats ensure the whole thing doesn't veer too sporty. The graphic tee is the bridge between the two. Important: A tiny bag has no business being part of a Third Outfit. It needs to be big enough for snacks, the layer you inevitably shed by noon, and all the other odds and ends that seem to accumulate over the course of a summer day.

A comfortable black dress might be fashion's greatest cheat code. Add a baseball hat, flip-flops, and a navy sweater tied at the waist (a color combo that adds instant depth), and you've got the perfect Third Outfit: sideline-ready, patio-approved.
Allow me to raise you your average athleisure outfit. My favorite kind of sporty dressing: Athletic-inspired, but not actually athletic. Meredith Blake would approve. Also, a quick shoutout to the AGOLDE Lydia Anorak (I bought in white), which has quietly become one of my most-worn purchases of the summer.

Green keeps catching my eye in a way it never has before. Consider this my gentle nudge (to myself) to stop buying only neutrals.
Also: the Deiji Studios Pleat Pant is worth the fuss. I finally tried them on at Idun (a St. Paul boutique that should be on everyone's radar) this week and immediately got it. My biggest concern was length. At 5’9”, I assumed they’d hit at an awkward spot, but the crop is perfect. The subtle front and back pleats, softly barrel-shaped leg, and low-to-mid rise create that elusive combination of relaxed and flattering. The fabric deserves a shoutout, too. Substantial enough that the white isn’t remotely see-through, but not so heavy that you’ll regret wearing them in July. A very strong contender for pull-on pant of the summer.

Relaxed drawstring denim shorts solve one of my biggest warm-weather grievances (rigid denim with zero give), while the pale yellow button-down scratches my current hyper-fixation with yellow, black, and white. The tonal accessories and white base make the whole thing feel intentional despite requiring very little effort.
Now I’m curious: what’s your version of a Third Outfit?

The first thing I thought of when I saw the capris outfit was Meredith Blake! Love being on the same page with Madeline Nachbar. 💚
I love the idea of the third outfit as an official name! So good!
